Dog dress patterns
Hello everyone! Today I bring you a free patterns to make an adorable tutu dress for dogs. To design this model I’ve inspired in tulle fairy dresses for girls but more simple and comfy adapted for dogs. Obviously you can also use this patterns to make a charming ballerina dog dress.
This dress is very easy to sew and it is composed by two parts. The top of the dress is like a sleeveless t-shirt slightly adjusted to the body and with no openings. For the top I recommend to use cotton stretch fabric or t-shirt fabric.
The bottom part is the tulle tutu that you can make in one color or in various combined colors as I did. I recommend make it in various colors because I like how it looks the mixing of the layers of different tulle colors. It is preferable to use pastel or soft color tulle to get more elegant and natural results. I have used apricot tulle with pale pink and some lemon yellow and violet too. Of course you can use other colors like lilac with violet or green with yellow or apricot with pale pink etc…
Here I let you some pics of Tara wearing her tutu fairy dress:
Canine model Tara is wearing an M size.
Cute dress for dogs!
Patterns are two: the front and the back. Have to cut the patterns with the fabric folded in half as indicated in the pattern so when unfold will get the entire piece as you can see in the image below.
HOW TO SEW THE TOP DRESS STEP BY STEP:
Start sewing the top or bodice and after make the tulle skirt.
Once we get the patterns cut out sew the shoulders seams and sides and finish with zig zag stitch to prevent fraying as you can see in the image below.
Finish with a hem all around the neckline and sleeves openings or optional sew a binding as I did. I have used folded strips of the same fabric.
First baste the binding to secure, sew and finish with zig zag stitch.
At last topstitch all along the seam for a better finish.
HOW TO SEW THE TUTU STEP BY STEP:
Now we gonna make the tulle tutu that we will attach to the top or bodice.
There are many tutorials on the Net about how to make tutus without sewing with knocks but that way you will get the waist too thick to sew to the top. So I decided to sew a casing on the tulle strips and passing an elastic. Here’s how.
Cut out tulle strips twice as long as the length wanted for the skirt and add 1 inch for the seam allowance. For example if we want a skirt 6 inch (15cm) length (size M) cut a strip that measures 12 inch+1 inch (30 cm+2 cm (seam allowance)= 32cm)
Take two stripes of the same color or different colors to combine (as I did) and fold in half.
Make a seam 0,5 inch (1cm) from the fold to create a casing for the drawstring. As shown below:
Pass the elastic through the casing we have made with the seam. Use a bodkin needle or if you don’t have any use a safety pin to draw elastic through the casing. Pull the elastic to gather the tulle
Repeat the same with more tulle strips and until completing all the waistline except the belly zone! Sew together the ends of the elastic to complete the skirt. Here’s how it will look:
Now attach the skirt to the top. First sew all the tulle line. On the belly zone sew a strip to hide the elastic as you can see in the image below.
Fold the strip over the elastic and topstitch. It will look like this:
The front:
The Back:
Optional sew a decorative ribbon on the waist and you’re done!

So cute….looking for a pattern to make a doggie nightgown.
My dogs do not like the tight neck and sleeves. So I use a tank top and cut it down to fit with a few easy adjustments. Then add the tutu part. But I have to say I get a lot of the inspiration for the clothes I make from this site. I shop the children’s section all the time for things I can use.
Thank you so much for this! I just made my first Yorkie dress and it came out so cute thanks to your instructions!
